"Laos isn't a place; it's a state of mind"

by TroyAn anonymous French Poet said, "The Vietnamese plant the rice, the Cambodians watch and the people of Laos listen to it grow".I will be visiting my “home” country Laos for the first time. Since I was born in Thailand and grew up in Amarillo TX, I see it as my equivalent to the Jewish “birth right” -- meaning it won't just be a trip but more of a journey. My journey starts next Saturday. We’ll be leaving from NYC and landing in Thailand. We will spend a couple days in Bangkok with a friend before heading off to Laos. The plan is to spend most of our time in the north (Luang Prabang) and then the center (Vientiane the capital) of the country. During the stay we’ll be meeting relatives that I have heard of only through letters, phone calls and photos. I’ll be re-experiencing a culture I am familiar with only through the eyes of someone who grew up in Texas. Okay, this is getting too heavy. I’ll drop all expectations and just let myself experience whatever comes my way.See you all when I get back.
